How To

How to Survive a Home Invasion

Home invasion is frightening, especially if you have children. We didn’t know that we would be experiencing it ourselves as we embarked on our home security system installation adventure. Here's our experience so far.

  1. Don't Let Your Kids See The Attackers. Our children were upstairs sleeping when two men entered our house. They were taken downstairs by us until police arrived. Our children were not hurt but the experience was enough for them to be traumatized.
  2. Lock up all valuables. The safe is located in our bedroom. We keep all valuables locked up. Even if someone is able to break into the house they won't have access.
  3. Keep an eye out for burglars. We live in a neighbourhood that is notorious for burglaries. We always keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles and people.
  4. Always have a backup plan. We will provide financial support for our family in the event of an emergency. If necessary, we have a plan for leaving the country.
  5. Be Prepared. You must be prepared if you find yourself in a position where you have to defend your life. Prepare food, water, and other supplies.
  6. Call 911 First. If you find out that someone has broken into your home, call 911 immediately. It's safer to call the authorities immediately than to wait for them at your door.
  7. Use common sense. Do not let anyone enter your home if you don't feel at home. Also, don't invite strangers to come over.
  8. Seek out help from neighbors and other people in the local area. If you feel uneasy, call friends or neighbors. They will be able to watch your back and call the police.
  9. Keep Calm and Do What Police Officers Tell You To. Keep calm and follow the instructions of officers. Don't run away or resist arrest.
  10. Take photos of all evidence. Photograph any evidence that is found during an investigation. This includes fingerprints, blood samples and other items.
  11. Local Law Enforcement can be contacted to file a report. No one was hurt, but you can still file a report to local law enforcement. This could help prevent you from being convicted of future crimes.
  12. Get in touch with your insurance company immediately. You should immediately contact your insurance company. Let them know everything and then ask for an adjuster.
  13. Remove Personal Belongings. Before you leave the scene, remove personal belongings. You can take off any expensive jewelry and store it somewhere safe.
  14. Keep Yourself Clean. Make sure you clean up after yourself. Clear away trash and broken glass. Make sure that all doors and windows are securely locked.
  15. Don't talk about the events. Do not talk about what happened to anyone. You never know who may try to use this information against or against you.
